It takes a special technique to compose and capture hand painted works of art.
The lighting has to be almost perfect to avoid any uneven light or hot spots on the painting due to the reflective qualities of the paints used by the artist. Careful consideration must also be given to the "white balance" in camera and during processing. The use of a grey card is highly recommended during the photo session to make the colors as true to the artist's choice as possible.

"The Butterfly"
Photographing vintage, antique art takes special consideration because of the lacquers used in the older paints and the glare and reflections presented by them.
Modern day acrylics present their own set of reflective qualities, but are much easier to deal with.
Here you will see two examples of photographed antique art that I own.
The paintings date from the mid 1800s to the very early 1900s. Each required a different lighting setup due to the reflective oils and the canvas shape. The wavy surface of the canvas managed to reflect the ambient light in many directions, causing glare
to appear in several sections of the paintings. With a little time, effort, and a lot of patience, these problems can be overcome.
