Most often, people relate to black and white as seeing a photo that is entirely black and white. I occasionally add a touch of color to cause an effect similar to hand tinting as practiced back in the film days. Along with the tinting effect and some split toning, you can achieve the affect shown here, a photo of a barn sitting on a hill, along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

This is a photo taken of a local bridge in Danville, Virginia. I used Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 software to add the dark effect, along with a touch of the software's high structure process, to create a rather dark and gloomy look. The photo looked nice in color, but the lighting was really not what I was looking for in this shot. When this happens, instead of wasting the photo, I decided to create a black and white. to try and recover a somewhat dull scene.
